(Sudan) Return of RAF test flight from Khartoum to Abu Suwer, 17 Jan 1926 arrival hs on front, signed by pilot V.C.Stonar, plain cover, violet three line "By Return of/Special Flight/Cairo to Khartoum" and violet "Khartoum 15/1/25" hs's. This flight was undertaken by RAF Squadron No. 47 as a test of the Fairey IIID aircraft equipped with the Napier Lion engine, and as a prelude to the Cairo-Cape Town flight planned for later in the year. The airport was dedicated as Lansds Downe Field in late October 1926 and was named after Lieutenant Commander Zachary Lansds Downe commander of the US Navy airship USS Shenandoah. It was the first airport in Youngstown and the first in the region to see airmail service.
