(GB External) World War II GB to Hong Kong, uncensored HMG Ministry of Pensions cover (embossed logo on flap), franked 1/- and 2/6d (sg 476), ms 'Via New York.via Trans and Pacific Air Services'. Correctly rated  3/6d for carriage on the new service opening on 21 May 1941 and  routed by sea to New York, then by air across the US and the Pacific to Hong Kong. Until then the only airmail alternative had been via the 5/- 'All Air' route. Correctly franked at the new service rate, this cover could have been carried on the first flight of this new service. It only operated for 6 months, and terminated on 7 Dec 1941 following the attack on Pearl Harbour. A nice item, full of history. Image.

Recorded in Stroud  "15 January (1946) West Coast Air Services began carrying mail on its Liverpool-Dublin services". The press announced that the service was starting on January 9th but there was no official announcement because GPO claimed it was only a temporary replacement of a similar service withdrawn at short notice (a 200 word explanatory article accompanies this item). No covers are known posted on 9/1, hence Stroud's entry of 15/1 for the start of the service.  Also see Hansard 24 July 1946 vol 426 c19, "West Coast Air Services Ltd (WCAS) is one of several companies which are operating certain services under an agreement with the Minister of Civil Aviation, the Associated Airways Joint Committee (AAJC) acting as agents. It was arranged with AAJC that WCAS Ltd, should cease to operate the Liverpool?Dublin and London?Dublin services on 1st July, 1946.
