Lot No: 465
Date: 1933, May 31
Est. price: £200.00
Category: Nyasaland

Description: First direct external flight from Nyasaland, PPC franked 1s 2d, canc Limbe/31 May 33, violet st. line 'First Flight' cachet, addressed to London with message "This is by City of Karachi which is the first direct Air Mail from Nyasaland". The first OFFICIAL airmail from Nyasaland to an external destination was arranged for June 5th from Zomba to Fort Jamieson, N Rhodesia, to be flown by an RAF service flight on their return to UK after attending the Nyasaland Air Week. Official souvenir covers were issued and a postage rate set of 1/- per 1/2oz. However, quite unexpectedly on June 1st' the Imperial Airways liner 'City of Karachi' returned to Salisbury thereby offering an immediate connection with the IAW northbound Cape Town-London service. So, at very short notice, a SPECIAL flight by the 'City of Karachi' was arranged between Zomba and Salisbury to collect UK mail in particular for OAT to London. So, although UNOFFICIAL, this flight then became the first airmail from Nyasaland to an external destination. No special cancellation/cachet was provided, and the only way of identifying covers from this flight are the '31 May 33' postmark and the new, hastily arranged, 1s 2d rate for UK mail. For this reason such covers are very scarce. A fine exhibit item. An explanatory 300 word text is included.
