Airmail cover addressed to the eminent aerophilatelist JHC Godfrey, franked 2/- Bermuda stamps canc St POSSIBLY THE ONLY BERMUDA FIRST ACCEPTANCE FOR SOUTH AFRICA, bs Durban 20 Jun 39, via Southampton for carriage on the PAN AMERICAN SOUTHERN ROUTE. Airmail cover addressed to the eminent aerophilatelist JHC Godfrey, franked 2/- Bermuda stamps canc St George's/8 Jun 39, and GB 1 1/2d canc London FS/13 Jun 39 for OAT all the way by 'Canopus' to Durban on the Imperial AW Africa Southbound service IAW DS 205 arriving19/6, see Wingent p172. Mail from Bermuda was accepted for the third trans-Atlantic service on the PAN Am route which had been inaugurated on 20 May. Ms verso '5 recorded' to GB'. Not listed in W.J. Clarke 1990. This is the first acceptance for South Africa by the Southern Route we have seen in 20 years and believe it could possibly be the only one, but this will need verification by an expert.
