Description: First airmail service during WWII, Shoreham to Belgium, no arrival ds, correctly rated 2 1/2d for PC, cancelled Sutton Coldfield cds, special printed card with logo and "First Despatch/War Air Mail/30 October 1939", cancelled by violet st line "Censor Permit No C4" censor mark, Francis Field authentication hs's x2 verso. On the outbreak of war flights over the east of England and Scotland were prohibited by the Air Navigation (Restriction in Time of War) Order 1939, and operations were moved from Croydon to Shoreham. The service was suspended when Germany invaded Norway in April 1940. A copy of a six page A4 article on the airmail services at Shoreham on the outbreak of WWII, is included with this item.
