Description: Airmail to ship, PARIS TO MOMBASSA. arrived Marseilles Gare Avion bs 6/3, then train back to Paris, bs Paris Avion bs 7/3 to joined the Imperial Airways Africa southbound service AS158 which left Croydon 7/3, arriving Brindisi 9/3 on Satyrus, Khartoum 12/3 on Hannibal, arriving Nairobi 13/3 where it was transferred to the WILSON AIRWAYS NAIROBI-MOMBASA-TANGA-ZANZIBAR service arriving 14/3 arrival cds, RATED F5.50 for F1.50 UPU plus F4 air fare. Cover addressed to passenger aboard 'Marechal Joffre' which arrived Mombasa 17/3. Built 1931 for the 'Messageries Maritimes' shipping company. It was manned by Vichy French Forces after the fall of France in 1940 and was in the Philippines when the United States entered World War II where she was taken over by a crew of downed US Navy fliers, who with the help of some French sailors who were not supportive of the Vichy government ,was sailed on to Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. Great routing, great research documentation, impeccable provenance, and in fine condition, ex Ted Proud archives. If this isn't postal history, what is?. A rare exhibit item.
