Description: MAURITANIA, Air France within Africa service, cover postmarked Atar (Mauritania) March 14, 1934 and addressed to an interpreter (for Air France ?) in Port-Etienne (Mauritania) with arrival b/s March 31st and transit b/s in Saint-Louis (Senיgal) of March 23rd. Atar is located in the interior of Mauritania just west of Port-Etienne and much closer to it than the southern city of Port-Louis. Instead of travelling by land from Atar to Port-Etienne this airmail cover travelled by land from Atar to Saint-Louis then, probably because of insufficient postage, went by land all the way up to Port-Etienne. This cover saw a lot of desert roads. Scott 27 (2) and 32 (2).

Missed the AS198 which had departed Athens on 14/121934, so caught AS199 which departed 22/12 arriving Khartoum 23/12 cds and sent on by train to Hassa Heissa, its original destination, where it arrived next day bs 24/12. There it was re-addressed and sent c400 miles by train to Um Ruaba where an **Dec 34 arrival ds was applied. Plain airmail etiquette cover, ms 'Flugpost', violet framed 'Lotecka posta' hs RATED 5k50. The ordinary surface postage was 2.50K for first 20 gr. and Proud gives an air mail rate to Sudan of 2.50K per 10 gr. So it may be 50c overpaid. A scarce journey with superb routing.

Description: Solomon Islands: VELLA LAVELLA to NEW ZEALAND: Qantas Empire Airways Ltd set up a Lae, New Guinea - Honiara route of their "Bird of Paradise" service with DC3 Aircraft. On the inward flight, from Lae, the plane could land at the old [Seabees wartime construct edl airfield on Vella Lavella and pick up mail. This 'First Flight off Vella Lavella' cover inaugurated the internal airmail service from 'Barakoma' airfield, near Bilua, to Honiara. At Honiara the mail was postmarked and despatched on the return flight back to Lae. In this instance machine and handst amps on the reverse show arrival in Auckland on 8th May and repostings in Auckland on 9th and 10th May. Scarce with great routing.
