Mail normally carried to Aklavik by river, the by dog team to the island. Cover carried on F/F Fort McMurray to Aklavik, and on to Herschel by RCMP dog team and water patrol, bearing Edmonton 25/11/19 depart and Herschell 2/5/30 arrival cds. (Scarce and Unusual Routings) Indo-China to France, VIETNAM TO MARSEILLE via SAIGON, originating Hai- Phong/Tonkin 26/3/31 cds and carried to Saigon bs 30/3 on the partly constructed  Trans-Indochina railway, hence the option of acceleration and the 'Service Accelere' label (see below). Then flown on the fortnightly Air Orient service leaving Saigon bs 3/4 and arriving Marseilles bs 12/4. CAMS FLYING BOATS were used between Marseille and Bayreuth, Farman 303 planes between Damascus and Karachi, and Fokker F VIIb planes between Karachi and Saigon. Plain cover having a red/black airmail etiquette with black cross control mark applied by the Bureau de Saigon (used until 30/6/31) testifying the franking was correct. Also a red/black 'Service Accelere' label used from 1929 to April 1936 to permit acceleration of letters between Saigon and Hanoi over, as yet, un built sections of the Transindochinese railway. The duration of the journey was less than 3 days and the postal surcharge was 5 cents, but this was not always applied, see Picirilli p80. A Correctly RATED 66c (60c air charge + 6c colonial). A super cover with great routing.

Scarce and Unusual Routings, 1931, Jan 26

Registered (hs) cover, black framed 'Par Avion/Jusqu'a (ms) Haifa' and a Polish 'Samolotem' (plane) hand stamp, and verso the remnants of a wax seal. RATED 7.50GR (ordinary postage was 50gr for the first 20 grams & 30gr for each additional, and registration was 60gr. We do not know the air fee.  The service IE185 was also the first to carry mail to connect with Tata & Sons first Karachi-Madras feeder service, flown 15&16 October. A cover in fine condition with truly rare routing, good research documentation and great provenance, which might be almost impossible to find again.

Atar is located in the interior of Mauritania just west of Port-Etienne and much closer to it than the southern city of Port-Louis. Instead of travelling by land from Atar to Port-Etienne this airmail cover travelled by land from Atar to Saint-Louis then, probably because of insufficient postage, went by land all the way up to Port-Etienne. This cover saw a lot of desert roads. Scott 27 (2) and 32 (2).

After the adhesives were cancelled on 4th September at Honiara the letter was returned along- port of its original flight path and on to Ruin, New Guinea. Finally it was taken from Kangu to Kihili by the motor vessel "Mlakuna" on 14th September. Two years later the District Officer at Gizo authorised the mail at Barakoma- to be cancelled in manuscript to avoid the delay caused through the mail being flown to Honiara for cancellation. Scarce item with superb routing.

On the inward flight, from Lae, the plane  could land at  the old  [Seabees wartime construct edl airfield on Vella Lavella and pick up mail.
