On May 18, 1919 – Harry Hawker and Lieutenant Commander Kenneth Mackenzie-Grieve attempted a non-stop Atlantic crossing but were forced to ditch their aircraft only 2,253 km (1,400 miles) after leaving Newfoundland. London's Daily Mail newspaper awarded them a prize of £5,000 for their attempt anyway.

Following his demonstration flights in the north of England early in 1913, he carried out the series of flights advertising the product of the Robert Sinclair Tobacco Company Ltd and, subsequently trained purposefully to fly upside-down. His career ended when he was killed in the First World War.

Imperial Airways used the Scylla for scheduled flights from London to Paris and other European cities. Two aircraft were built, Scylla (G-ACJJ) and Syrinx (G-ACJK). Both served with the airline until its merger into BOAC in 1939 and both were taken out of service the following year.
