A further day was lost at Beaufort West because of very bad weather but the City of Jodhpur had made up time when it arrived at Kisumu and thereafter, by only making a 'one night stop' (at Broken Hill) instead of the normal two (by overflying Salisbury and Mbeya), the schedule was regained and the cover arrived in London on schedule. Capt Wilson flew Jo'burg to Broken Hill then Capt Caspareuthus took over to Kisumu (ref The Cape Argus, date unknown). Corner cover RATED 2/6 (6d, 1/- x2), airmail etiquette annulled by red double bar Jusqu'a applied in London. One other cover is known. |

In record time of 16 days 20 hrs. Piloted by HL Brook, May 6th-May 23rd 1936." The cover was sent to HL Brook at Newtown house Aerodrome prior to the flight, carried on the flight, and posted on his arrival to the pilot at the municipal airport Cape Town. A very fine example. CF Morris, FD Winglet and C Swynnerton the world famous tsetse fly scientist who died in a de Havilland Leopard Moth plane crash four years later on 8 June 1938. Accompanying this cover is a newspaper cutting reporting the accident and that WM Bawden, the pilot was also killed. Exlaining six signatures on an apparently routine internal air cover flown four years earlier, including those of three well known pilots and a world famous scientist who all worked in Tanganyika, will not only be an exciting challenge but one which, if successful, will likely add significant value to this unusual item. |
