(GB External) Very scarce first direct airmail with a fascinating history. London to Dublin, airmail etiquette cover franked 5 1/2d, typed 'First Airmail/London-Dublin'. Recorded in Stroud "15 January (1946) West Coast Air Services began carrying mail on its Liverpool-Dublin services". The press announced that the service was starting on January 9th but there was no official announcement because GPO claimed it was only a temporary replacement of a similar service withdrawn at short notice (a 200 word explanatory article accompanies this item). No covers are known posted on 9/1, hence Stroud's entry of 15/1 for the start of the service. Also see Hansard 24 July 1946 vol 426 c19, "West Coast Air Services Ltd (WCAS) is one of several companies which are operating certain services under an agreement with the Minister of Civil Aviation, the Associated Airways Joint Committee (AAJC) acting as agents. It was arranged with AAJC that WCAS Ltd, should cease to operate the Liverpool?Dublin and London?Dublin services on 1st July, 1946.
