Lot Number: 241 | Date: 1938, Dec 31 Est. price: £385.00 Category: Recovered/Salvaged Description: RARE PILOT SIGNED, Short S23 Empire flying boat CALYPSO made forced landing in English Channel, Cover date stamped Pretoria 19 December 1938, flown by S.A. Airways Coast Service to Durban to connect with IAW service DN 156 (departed 25/12). After making an overnight stop at St. Nazaire, she was flying to Southampton on 31/12 (one day late) when she experienced engine trouble and was forced to land in the Channel near Alderney. She was towed to Cherbourg by the Swedish motor tanker Rigel, arriving at 06.00 on 1/1/39. Mails and passengers were flown to London by an Imperial AW plane, arriving the same morning, but two days late. COVER SIGNED BY PILOT Comdr. G.S .BROWN/31/12/38, Ref #381231, Sandford £250/300.
